Dark Technology

Dark Technology is divided into several types, and is mostly the purview of Algeroth, the Apostle of War. Sometimes, it is generically referred to as "Necrotechnology" or "Necrotech", but it is more accurately divided into three categories: Black Technology, Necro Technology, and Bio Technology.

One thing that all of this Dark Technology has in common is that those who handle it run the risk of Corruption.

Black Technology

Black Technology refers to the taking of existing machinery - typically of human origin - and twisting it by means of the Dark Symmetry. Items modified in this way tend to become darker, more disturbing versions of their former selves. Surfaces are sometimes covered with sharp, barbed points, sometimes to the point where it seems almost impossible to wield the item without impaling oneself. Metal often takes on a twisted, molten appearance, or else it becomes dark and has a mottled, pocked appearance - as if it had been terribly corroded, then blasted clean, but still bearing the wounds of severe rust spots. Generally, "necrofied" metal takes on a blackish, stained appearance.

Although items modified in this way often look broken or molten, they in fact work optimally, and typically with greater performance than before ... just that they tend to be less reliable.

Some weapons of Black Technology look quite alien, while others intentionally look more like those of human origin - More than one unwitting human has taken up a gun of the Dark Legion and made use of it, only to be started down the road to Corruption by continued contact with the unholy artifact.

Necro Technology

Necro Technology is the "science" of taking dead organic material and reviving it by unholy means, incorporating it into machinery and using it as a vessel for dark spirits to bestow a malevolent intelligence to formerly inanimate objects. Many of the vehicles in the service of Algeroth are prime examples of this technology, looking like broken hulks of human vehicles that have been invaded by patches of rotting flesh that somehow direct and enhance the performance of the craft, without need for drivers. Sometimes weapons are enhanced with necro-technological features, and of course, this is extended to the raising of dead soldiers to join Algeroth's ranks of the Undead Legionnaires.

Bio Technology

By no means are all of the monsters of the Dark Legion "undead". Far from it, as the undead are mindless automatons, incapable of the creativity required to be truly a danger to humanity.

Bio technology focuses on the corruption and warping of living organic matter, often to the point of reshaping it into entirely new forms. Citadels of Algeroth include large breeding farms where twisted creatures are born and formed, destined to become components in the construction of horrible monsters, or as organic components for machinery - or even biological enhancements grafted into the bodies of the servants of the Apostles.

While Undead Legionnaires are products of Necro Technology, Necromutants and Centurions are products of Bio Technology - once human, but corrupted by exposure to the Dark Symmetry, and changed into hideous monsters with only a faint whisper of their formerly human existence.

Apostles and Dark Technology

The Dark Apostles vary in their utilization of the different types of Dark Technology, some because of access, some because of personal taste.

  • Algeroth - Algeroth utilizes all forms of Dark Technology, and is in fact the undisputed master of it, in all its forms. Servants of Algeroth may acquire Dark Gifts, Necrobionic Enhancements, and Bio-Technological Gifts, and may use the considerable arsenal of Black Technology available to Algeroth.
  • Ilian - Ilian is the Mistress of the Dark Symmetry, and shuns Bio-Technology, though even she makes some limited use of it - assigning her expendable "Children of Ilian" to the maintenance of such things. Her servants use weapons of Black Technology, but do not often utilize weapons of Necro Technology or Bio Technology. Cultists of Ilian may not acquire Necrobionic Enhancements or Bio-Technological Gifts. They do, however, have a wider selection of Dark Gifts to choose from, and the most powerful of her servants may even choose Dark Gifts from the lists of the powers of the other Dark Apostles.
  • Semai - Semai is most closely allied with Algeroth, and he has no particular qualms about the use of Bio-Technology or Necro-Technology. However, his Heretics do not as a matter of course acquire Bio-Technological Gifts or Necrobionic Enhancements, and they quite often are restricted to perfectly mundane human weaponry, and may not even have access to Dark Gifts - Such things, after all, only make them more easily detected by the Inquisition.
  • Demnogonis - Demnogonis has no particular allegiances regards the other Apostles, often playing Algeroth against Ilian, or vice versa. Through arrangements with Algeroth, Demnogonis makes considerable use of Necrobionic Enhancements and Bio-Technological Gifts, but Degeneration is a very real danger for Heretics of Demnogonis. With Demnogonis, the path to either Transfiguration or Degeneration is short and violent, and even Transfiguration does not necessarily grant immortality. While Demnogonis' legions necessarily make use of mass-produced weapons such as the Kratach, their weapons tend to be of Bio-technological construction (such as the horrid Plaguebringer gun).
  • Muawijhe - Muawijhe's servants do not utilize Necro-Technology or Bio-Technology, per se. Although all of the Dark Apostles have associations with alien beings from previously conquered realities, Muawijhe is most devoted to the utilization of alien technologies that suit his deranged nature. His heretics generally do not have access to Necro-Technology or Bio-Technology, but not because of any distaste on his part - simply because he hasn't endeared himself sufficiently to Algeroth to have regular use of them, and he does not have so many human followers that need such equipping.
