Of the five megacorporations, Capitol is the closest to a true corporation, based on principles of democracy and capitalism. Capitol has its origins in a conglomerate of North American businesses, primarily from the United States. Capitol was the first to colonize and terraform Luna (Earth's moon) so that it could sustain life, and it then moved on to Mars. Mars is still the great Red Planet, as the Great Rust Desert covers a considerable portion of its surface, but there are also fertile farmlands and even forests. The deserts of Capitol are not particularly hot - Despite ancient technologies that maintain an Earth-like atmosphere and gravity by processes no longer understood, Mars tends to be colder than old Earth.
Most of Mars has been explored, and there isn't really that much in the way of frontier to be explored, so much as exploited. Railroads and canals crisscross the planet, and a great railway belts the planet about its equator. While Capitol is dominant on Mars, other corporations have gotten their own footholds - particularly Mishima and Imperial, which often clash with Capitolian forces. Citizens of Capitol are shareholders in the megacorporation, and elect representatives to the Board of Directors. This "democracy" is not totally egalitarian, for the more shares one owns, the more votes one has. Instead of a president, there is a CEO. Capitol's military relies heavily on a wide variety of special forces, and on air superiority. The Capitolian public does not react well to camera footage of their young men coming back in body bags, and thus Capitol tends to focus more on bombarding targets from a "safe" distance. While Capitol is by no means pristine pure, it is usually on the defensive in military conflicts with the other megacorporations, and it has been especially active in efforts to unite the megacorporations to fight this mysterious "Dark Legion" menace. It has been a major contributor to the initial formation of the Cartel, though relations have gotten strained over time. This said, Capitol still does its share of buying up or muscling out private businesses that compete with its own products, and it is pretty aggressive when it comes to maneuvering to purchase holdings of the other megacorporations. Capitol products are pretty much middle-of-the-road compared to the other megacorporations. Capitol products are mass-produced, of reasonable quality and price, and reasonable reliability and complexity. It doesn't really stand out as the best or the worst in any particular area, so its products can be considered "typical" representations of technology available in the Mutant Chronicles universe. |
